20 September 2015
Gooooood evening! What is everybody up to this fine September evening? Been a bit busy here this evening, with a Packers game as well as WWE Night of Champions on tonight. Much back and forth channel flipping will be commencing, Did find some time as well for a quick round of Catherine or two while I was at it. And of course, typing up this blog I could focus my attention of the football and wrassling. 😛
And as usual, the Geek World keeps chugging along with many things to make us both cheer and boo. A group of scientists are developing a prototype patch that can help heal heart tissue that was damaged by heart attacks, YouTuber Geoff the Hero creates a level on Super Mario Maker that brilliantly mocks overly dramatic games, we got some more musical awesomeness from Smooth McGroove, Chocobo racing in FF15 will have a slight Fast and Furious feel to it and contrary to popular belief, it seems that Masturbation does have some health benefits after all according to science.
But emerging from the Dark Side this week, Persona 5 gets pushed back to 2016, the demo for the Kickstarter-funded Mega Man spiritual successor Mighty No. 9 got delayed itself, Pacific Rim 2’s fate is still seemingly in limbo in spite of Del Toro’s assurance otherwise, the sad, tragic descent of Konami continues and in a botch job bad enough to make Eva Marie matches look good, 2K Sports is leaving out the “Four Horsewomen” of WWE out of its WWE2k16 game……with zero chance of even being added as DLC. Well, let’s take a ride aboard the Crazy Train and see what will be Raved and Ranted about this week, shall we? J
Geek Rave of the Week
Once again, the subject of this week’s Rave of the Week is really more of an update (of sorts) involving a rather unlikely source.
You may remember back in April, it was announced that Cards Against Humanity was set to release a “Science pack”, which was a (you guessed it) science-themed booster pack of cards, with a portion of the proceeds going towards STEM, a program designed to help get women involved in the science, tech, engineering and math by providing qualifying applicants full-ride scholarships for those degrees.
As horrible of a people as we may be (especially those of us who play the game), we know a good cause when we see one. And boy, did we come through in a big way. As you see, it was just very recently published in a Polygon article that the sales for the Science Pack far exceeded expectations. They just started to accept applications for CAH’s Science Ambassador Scholarship’s first award, which is set to be awarded for the 2016 academic year. The award itself will be awarded in Spring of that year, with the trust fund currently sitting at, get this, over $500,000!
You can go the Science Ambassador Scholarship’s official website to send in a Video Application if you are so eligible and can even still buy the Science Pack, which will go to increase the trust fund. Way to go, people of the internet. Way to be horrible for a good reason, very much unlike the people who I will Rant about next…..
Geek Rant of the Week
Didn’t have to wait until late Saturday to find my Rant Subject this week. And it’s not so much as what someone in the Geek World said or did so much as it was the people who reacted to that thing that’s got my feathers ruffled. But first a quick summation of events leading to the rant. In case you have been living under a rock, a Muslim teenager in Texas by the name of Ahmed Mohamed, brought a homemade clock he himself created to his school, only to eventually end up arrested because the school staff (and some cops) were convinced he actually brought a bomb instead. But some good did come out of the bout of ignorance. The kid’s got potential offers lined up with MIT AND Harvard and also got an invite to chill with the President at the White House.
Then on Wednesday, Arrow star Stephen Amell broke his self-imposed “no tweeting on current events” policy, tweeting “Stereotyping Texas isn’t any better than stereotyping Ahmed. Just so we’re clear.” In other words, “two wrongs don’t make a right”. As easy as it is to poke fun at Texas (I usually only resort to Dallas Cowboys jokes and ones involving the state and a certain Power Ranger alum’s ego), Amell makes a pretty solid point. It is common sense, after all.
But unsurprisingly, the internet quickly reminded us all how nonexistent the concept of Common Sense is these days.
Sad, but true.
You can see some of the negative reactions here, the one that really stood out to me was:
A few things perplex and/or bather me with jai’s tweet:
- What about “Stereotyping Texas isn’t any better than stereotyping Ahmed.” would even remotely come close to indicating that this was all about Mr. Amell? Like I said, all the Arrow star was doing was making a common sense remark.
- #WhiteLivesMatter is a hashtag that just screams racism and we know racist is NOT one of Stephen Amell’s personality traits.
- Jai has clearly failed to pay any significant attention to their Language Arts classes in school, as there’s enough spelling and grammatical errors in that tweet to make even the calmest of Teachers wanna punt this person clear across town.
Stephen Amell, if by any chance you are reading this, on behalf of all the sensible people out there, you have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to apologize for. If anybody should apologize, it should be jai for taking a common sense statement and misconstruing it so bad, even right-wing pundits would be confused. While we’re at it, we may as well include the Ahmed’s (now former, as he intends to transfer out) teachers and the police force for their blatant ignorance (and the fact that even though they very clearly broke laws in the manner they detained the poor kid, likely won’t get punished for it).
And now, perhaps you need to click this link for a most unexpected palet cleanser. 😉
Well, my fellow geeks and geekettes across the interwebs, that brings this blogiside of GR2 Weekly to a most satisfying end. And as I tend to enjoy mentioning every chance I get, should you have any suggestions for what I should Rant and/or Rave about (please suggest away, I promise I won’t bite), feel free to message me and you are equally as encouraged to post much linkage on the official GR2 Weekly Facebook page. See you next week! While you’re still here, though, be sure to check out and Vote Up Lemme Addams everybody. Sonny Strait will be a happy person. 😛
