A most fantastic day to you all out there! Hope things are going alright with you. If you’re heading to Geek.Kon in a couple weeks, you will be in for a major treat and with any luck, your pre-convention preparations are going at least relatively smoothly. As far as the Geek World is concerned, it just keeps chugging along as usual, both the good times and the bad. Amongst the bigger bummers this week: The unexpected delay of the Kickstarter-funded Mighty No. 9 is raising quite a few eyebrows, a Ryan Kopf-run convention is causing headaches as they usually do (check out Nerd & Tie), Karma instantly stuck a Twitch user who decided to do a “joke swatting” to end his session, Jumanji is getting an inexplicable reboot and Marvel’s marketing team has screwed up yet again by omitting Black Widow from some of the Blu-ray and DVD covers for the upcoming home release of Avengers: Age Of Ultron. But amongst the highlights: Star Trek Alumni Nichelle Nichols will be flying in a NASA mission later this year, Scientific studies have shown that the Birth Control pill has prevented over 200,000 cases of Womb Cancer, comedy classic Monty Python and the Holy Grail is getting a special 40th Anniversary re-release, we got new videos from both Banjo Guy Ollie and The Slants and it would seem MMA fighter Ronda Rousey is quite the Pokemon fanatic. And now for your reading amusement (and possible need for headdesking for what is about to immediately come up), this week’s Rant and Rave of the Week.
Geek Rant of the Week
Whenever you play any Local Multiplayer game with your friends and/or family, no matter the game, there’s almost always going to be a dispute about something someone did and maybe some friendly trash talk. But every once in a blue moon, crap just gets completely out of hand and ends up a disasterrific mess. And the subject of this week’s Rant (courtesy of Kotaku) is the regurgitated cherry on top of the Ice Crap Sundae. This past Wednesday, a couple of (I now assume former) friends were playing a game (that wasn’t named) in Columbus, Ohio when things somehow got to a very violent point when one of them pulled out a gun and opened fire on the other.
That would be an understatement.
The gunman (only known as “Nick”) proceeded to shoot the other guy, later identified as Eugene Walker (26 years of age) a total of four times: Once in the Abdomen, once in the forearm, once in the shoulder and for whatever reason, the fourth shot nailed poor Eugene square in the arse. If there is an upside to this, Eugene was able to escape under his own power and call 911. He was then able to undergo emergency surgery and is expected to make a full recovery according to the police that responded to the call. “Nick” (as of this posting) is still at large and with any luck, will be apprehended soon. While it isn’t publically known what game the pair was playing when s**t hit the fan (and not trying to make light of the situation), but the smart money says one of these games might have been involved:
Geek Rave of the Week
For as long as Anime has existed here in the States, one thing has remained constant despite all the changes: The Debate between Subbed Anime and Dubbed Anime. You pretty much can’t go a single day without seeing at least one debate raging on in some Internet forum or Facebook group. But thanks to some of Dragonball Z’s voice actors, it seems the debate may have been settled once and for all. The folks over at Nerdist had the oh-so-brilliant idea to invite over three of Dragonball Z’s voice actors (Sean Schemmel (Goku/King Kai), Christopher Sabat (Vegeta/Piccolo), and Chris Ayres (Frieza)) and have them redub some of cinema’s classic movie scenes………but using their DBZ voices in the process. The end result? Pure, Grade-A 100% Certified Comedy Gold.
And much like what Dorkly indicates in the article, Bill Pulman giving the famous speech from the movie Independence Day the ‘ol King Kai treatment is by and far the funniest clip in the nearly 3-minute long video. Seriously, go check it out (in the hotlink at the beginning of the Rave). Believe it.
Shut it, Naruto. 😛
Well, my fellow geeks and geekettes across the interwebs, that brings this blogiside of GR2 Weekly to a most satisfying end. And as I tend to enjoy mentioning every chance I get, should you have any suggestions for what I should Rant and/or Rave about (please suggest away, I promise I won’t bite), feel free to follow me both on Tumblr and WordPress. But as a friendly reminder, be sure to spread the word about GR2 Weekly. You all are pretty awesome. You are equally as encouraged to post much linkage on the official GR2 Weekly Facebook page and I just as strongly encourage you to like and comment on some of the links I post. I enjoy interacting with you all. See you next week! While you’re still here, though, be sure to check out and Vote Up Lemme Addams everybody. Sonny Strait will be a happy person. 😛
